Build Confidence with Workplace Laser Safety for Welding
This foundational but topic-specific online self-guided theory course introduces the key principles of laser safety, including laser classifications, risks, and protective measures. It’s ideal for anyone in a workplace where laser welding/cutting lasers are used — even if you’re not operating them directly. It is suitable for business due diligence before buying laser devices, so safe setup and induction training SOP’s are in place.
Designed to help your business meet its legal obligations, the course refers to current AS/NZS Laser Safety Standards, the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015, and the General Risk and Workplace Management Regulations 2016 as they relate to the use of Laser Welders. You’ll gain the knowledge to ensure a safer laser-welder work environment and to meet minimum compliance requirements for evidence of induction and/or training in the reduction of harm caused by laser as a recognised workplace hazard.

Lasers used for welding our one of the most dangerous lasers you can wield, it is essentially a light saber with the power of megawatts and capable of causing amputation, and serious skin burns, and instant blindness.
Equip your Health & Safety team with knowledge to have workers safely operate around your high-powered laser: Learn all about hazard controls, safe practices, and how to utlise international laser safety standards.
AS/NZS Laser Safety Standards state that anyone using a Class 4 laser SHALL have a trained LSO. Additionally, the Health & Safety Act 2015 makes mention of ‘Officers’ who are nominated people that hold specialised skills and knowledge; they advise the PCBU to reduce their risk of prosecution. Although WorkSafe do not deem an LSO to be held liable as an officer, your role is a vital one.
Laser is a specialised field, and general Health & Safety trained persons are not necessarily aware of all the potential hazards and control measures for laser welding.
Having a nominated Laser Safety Officer (LSO) means that person can reduce risk and ensure the laser workplace is adhering to and avoiding potential issues under the law. Read a legal take on this as it relates to enforceable undertakings.
Should your worker amputate a finger, burn their hands and not be able to work, or worse, cause irreversible eye damage, you will be liable for prosecution, and any of that can happen in less than the blink of an eye. Check out what happened to a steel provider under WorkSafe law breaches.

This LSO certification will teach you what you need to manage high-power lasers, such as: You do not need a LSO at each site. It may make the most sense to have a single nominated LSO for the entire company, as it is not necessarily a full-time position, and then have deputy LSOs around the company’s locations.
Those persons can carry out instructions and tasks as part of their normal roles, thereby incorporating the requirements related to laser safety.
You will also learn how to use the vast resources provided to create your own laser safety management programme assisting your workplace with compliance to the Health & Safety Laws in New Zealand. The same information can be utlised for Australian workplaces too.
-
As a requirement of AS/NZS laser safety standards, the back of the laser should have been marked with its classification label to state specifications and safety reasons.
Laser welders should be marked as Class 4, and should state the wavelength (nm), pulse range, and power range, along with any specifications unique to the device.
Class 4 laser workplaces should have a trained Laser Safety Officer (LSO).
